Big Feelings: Helping Kids Name Their Emotions
When kids can name a feeling, they can start to handle it. Simple words and a feelings chart help.
Meltdowns often happen because a child has a big feeling and no words for it. Giving them the words is one of the most useful things you can do.
Name it for them first
"You're frustrated because the tower fell down." Describing what you see shows them what the feeling is called.
Use a feelings chart
A chart of faces lets younger kids point instead of explain. There's a free printable one in Activities & Printables.
